Mel Gibson's Divorce

Last night, while investigating whether I could implement buzz.yahoo.com on this blog I came across this headline:

Mel Gibson's Wife Files for Divorce in LA (AP)
http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.ap.org/mel-gibsons-wife-files-divorce-la-ap

I felt sorry and surprised to hear this. Yes, I know I'm hopelessly behind the times. The thing is -- I actually hate this kind of thing.

Yesterday, following the text of the article, yahoo displayed a comments section where people debated whether Robyn should really leave Mel, how much money she'll get, whether he's a whack job...all sorts of nasty uglies. The comments are what really disturbed me.

The practice of strangers weighing in on whether someone has justifiably filed for divorce brings out the worst in us. And -- it ALWAYS hurts the children.

Why do total strangers feel they have a right to stand as judge and jury when any poor slob gets divorced, public figure or no?

What do you think?

If anyone has a scripture they can relate to this, please share.
Always xox, Cheeky

I didn't bother to read the Mel Gibson "twitter." People, like Gibson, who have been high profile and outspoken with their views tend to get noticed. They court the media as a means of generating interest in their agenda. It should come as no surprise when the details of their lives also become an open book to the public.

When I saw the headlines, I simply saw the headlines and moved on. I didn't allow it to become a destraction. There are much larger issues at hand.

Way to go and I'm glad to hear it, Sherry! Thanks for your comments.

I think the word for this is 'schadenfreude' which wikipedia defines as 'pleasure derived from the suffering of others'. And doesn't throwing rocks at others make us feel just a"wee bit superior" (to quote Dana Carvey) as well? I love the blog Cheeky. I like how you take on tough issues and wonder about them out loud. I have no scripture verse to share here but appreciate how even when you 'don't get' something you stay positive and find some way to laugh about it. Have a wonderful day...spring-- Thank God-- is here!!!

"Schadenfreude" -- great word, Molly. Thanks for your wonderful comments. And for reminding us of Dana Carvey. I feel better already :) I hope you have a beautiful day, too. Thanks for visiting!

I heard the news yesterday too and felt sad that anyone has to go through difficult times. But 'we are of this world' and that comes with the all our humaness and the muck that goes with it. Easter reminds us that there is new grace for every day and every person no matter the sin and evil of the world. I thank God for that amazing gift! Let's ignore the gossip and pray for grace for all involved.

I heard the news, too, and felt very sad for their whole family. Mel has chosen for himself a very public career and with that comes the many benefits of money and fame, but the downside of this public career choice also comes much scrutiny and gossip. There will always be judging by people no matter what circles we are in --no escaping it--as anonymous above said..."we are of this world". I'm thankful for God's word and truth to get us through and to show us how to be different from the world. We must keep our "eyes fixed on Jesus" and His truth. Personnally, through my hardship, the upside of this time is when I gained a much deeper and closer relationship with the Lord. This will be my prayer for the Gibson's that through this trial that Jesus' love and grace will become real to them.

I'm reminded of and cling to 2 verses...

Hebrews 12: 1-3
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

James 2-4
2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

See? This is why I love you beautiful church ladies. You are so wise, kind, mature, and reasonable. Just like I want to be when I grow up! Thanks for your comments. Bless you, ladies.

p.s. I'm writing this from the public library. Shortly after posting this my PC totally died. "Could it be...Satan :)" (Dana Carvey again) Or maybe the big guy upstairs telling me to shut up already?!... xo, Cheeky

OK, I'm mostly laughing b/c your email subject line said, "This one's important." So right away I thot, "Ooo, something vital -- must read!" And then my next thot was "So the other ones haven't been as important?!" ha ha. As for Mel, I really don't care that much. I find it sad after so many years of marriage, but w/o being behind the closed doors to see/hear what's been going on, there's no way for any of us to know. Except for them and for God. Sorry, no scripture -- just my gut! Annie

Annie, you are too funny. Sorry about this post. It was important at 3:00 a.m.!

I couldn't bring myself to give you guys a link to the ugly comments. So I basically ranted about something no one saw. Ugh. Somedays being a Christian is really complicated :)

Thanks for reading! xoxox, Cheeky

well at least most of the Gibson kids are moved out; maybe this will minimize collateral damage from the divorce

I hope so. What a mess.
